Auto Theft Charges
Trusted Atlanta Criminal Defense Lawyer—(888) 228-2775
Theft of an automobile, commonly known as carjacking, is one of the gravest
types of theft crimes, punishable by heavy fines and jail time. Even if
you are not accused of stealing a vehicle without the threat of violence,
you need a dedicated Atlanta criminal defense attorney to contest your
charges and protect your freedom.
At Sylvan Law Firm, LLC I am a widely-recognized defense lawyer named to
the Top 100 Trial Lawyer list by National Trial Lawyers for my tireless
advocacy on behalf of my clients. With thousands of criminal cases under
my belt, I know just what is needed to beat the prosecution and secure
your future. Trust my firm to provide the knowledgeable counsel and aggressive
representation you need.
Defending Client from Theft Charges
If no violence was used in stealing the automobile, the crime can be charged
as a general theft crime which is based on the value of property you are
accused of stealing.
Penalties for theft crimes can include:
- Property worth $1,500 or less are charged as a misdemeanor
- Property worth between $1,500 and $5,000 is considered a felony, with 1
to 5 years in prison
- $5,000 to $25,000 worth of property can come with up to 10 years in prison
- Property worth more than $25,000 is punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison
If you are accused of taking the vehicle by force or intimidation, a true
carjacking conviction is even worse, punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison
and up to $100,000 in fines for a first offense.
I Consistently Protect the Accused
As with other theft crime charges where no violence is included, as a skilled
Atlanta theft crimes defense lawyer, I can argue on your behalf that you
did not intend to permanently deprive anyone of their property (in this
case, their vehicle), but were under the impression that you had permission
to use it. Intent is inherently difficult for the prosecution to establish
beyond reasonable doubt, and I can use this to undermine the prosecution’s
case against you to protect your freedom.
As the accused, you still have rights—let my firm ensure your rights
when so much is at stake.
