About Coleman Sylvan
Coleman Sylvan was born and raised in Dallas, Texas but was drawn to the
Atlanta area after spending a great deal of time there visiting friends
and family. Coleman spent four years in Greenville, SC attending Furman
University before heading back to Texas and to attend law school at Southern
Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law.
From early on, Coleman had a passion for trial work and this desire was
further solidified while in law school. He wanted a practice that would
allow him to spend as much time as possible in a courtroom and in front
of juries. After discussing his options with professors and local attorneys,
Coleman determined that the best way to accomplish his goals was to become
a prosecutor after graduation.
Experience as a Prosecutor
Coleman became a prosecutor in September of 2005 and tried his first case
as lead counsel within a week. It didn’t take long for him to realize
he had made the right choice for his career. As a misdemeanor prosecutor
Coleman was in trial on almost a weekly basis trying cases like DWI, DUI,
Assault, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana,
Theft cases just to name a few. Along with taking cases to trial Coleman
handled thousands of cases that resulted in plea bargains. Among his other
duties was to investigate the cases assigned to him, meet with witnesses
and victims as well police officers from every agency in the area.
After a short time as a misdemeanor prosecutor Coleman was promoted to
Misdemeanor Chief where he was placed in charge of newer prosecutors.
Part of his duties as a Chief was to train these new prosecutors on how
to prepare and present a case, as well as training Police Officers on
what types of evidence to collect and how to testify in Court. Coleman’s
continued success in court resulted in quickly being promoted to felony
As a felony prosecutor Coleman handled nearly every type of case there
is from, felony
DWI, Possession of a Controlled Substance including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine,
ecstasy, and prescription pills. Coleman also handled
fraud, evading in a motor vehicle, arson,
assault, assault of a peace officer, aggravated assault,
robbery, sexual assault, sexual assault of a child and several murder trials including
capital murder. He was involved in every aspect of these cases from investigation
to plea negotiations all the way to a jury trial and on several occasions
through the appellate process. As a felony prosecutor Coleman spent a
year working for the white-collar crime division. This unit handled the
complex white-collar cases brought into the office. These cases included
mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and complex theft cases. This was a
very specialized unit that dealt only with the largest most complex cases.
Becoming a Criminal Defense Attorney
Over his six and a half years working as a prosecutor Coleman handled thousands
of cases and was involved in
over 150 jury trials and well over 100 trials before the court. After handling the amount and types of cases that he did Coleman felt
it was time to start a new chapter in his life.
After leaving the office Coleman partnered with one of his former co-workers
Brock Duke, forming Sylvan & Duke, P.C. Coleman and Brock decided
to join forces because they believed their extensive experience and time
spent with the District Attorney’s office allows them a unique perspective
with which to help their clients.
